The “Snowfall” spinoff has been ordered to series at FX.
As previously reported, “Snowfall” stars Gail Bean and Isaiah John will reprise their roles from the original show in the new series, while Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith and Simmie Sims III will also star in the spinoff. It was officially picked up to pilot at FX back in March.
The official logline for the untitled drama states, Set in ‘90s Los Angeles soon after the end of the original series, a recovering addict (Bean) strives to take West Coast rap mainstream — while gang wars erupt and record labels move to exploit hip hop culture for their own gain.”
Malcolm Spellman will write and executive produce, with “Snowfall” alums Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson all executive producing as well. FX Productions is the studio.
“This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution,” said Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment. “We worked with Malcolm Spellman on the documentary series ‘Hip Hop Uncovered’ and he has encyclopedic knowledge of this material. This is a breakout starring role for Gail Bean and, as always, Isaiah John is terrific along with the ensemble cast. Snowfall was one of the most successful FX dramas ever and we’re excited that Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme and other veterans of the Snowfall creative team are on board.”
Created by the late great John Singleton as well as Eric Amadio and Andron, “Snowfall” explored the crack cocaine epidemic in South Central LA through the perspective of different characters. Those included budding drug kingpin Franklin Saint, CIA operative Teddy McDonald, and cartel enforcer Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata. The highly-popular show aired for six seasons on FX between 2017 and 2023.
