Heretic, the Athens-based film sales house, has acquired Kai Stänicke‘s “Trial of Hein,” the opening film of Berlin Film Festival’s Perspectives, the competitive section for fiction feature debuts. The German distributor is DCM.
The film follows Hein, who returns to his home village on a remote island after 14 years away, only to discover that the close-knit community no longer recognizes him. Suspecting him to be an imposter, they demand a trial to determine his true identity.
Stänicke, who is also the film’s screenwriter, writes about the film: “ ‘Trial of Hein’ is an intimate exploration of identity and belonging. Who hasn’t looked back at an earlier version of themselves and been surprised by how much has changed? Going back home forces us to confront the person we used to be. At its core, the film captures that fragile moment when you stop pretending to be who you once were, even if doing so turns you into a stranger to those who thought they knew you.”
Ioanna Stais, Heretic’s head of sales and acquisitions, commented: “ ‘Trial of Hein’ is a masterfully crafted debut that balances subtle tension with emotional depth. Kai Stänicke reveals a distinctive cinematic voice, one that blends visual precision with psychological insight, signaling a filmmaker of rare promise. With its striking story and assured execution, the film is poised to captivate audiences while generating strong interest from buyers, establishing Stänicke as a talent to watch on the international stage.”
“Trial of Hein” is produced by Andrea Schütte, Dirk Decker and Dario Suter, with Katrin Jochimsen, Felix von Boehm and Stänicke serving as co-producers. The film is a Tamtam Film production, co-produced with Dario Suter, Lupa Film and ZDF – Das kleine Fernsehspiel, and supported by MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, nordmedia – Film and Media Company of Lower Saxony/Bremen, Hessen Film & Medien, the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), and German Films.
Tamtam Film’s Decker and Schütte said: “With their finely curated slate and strong festival presence, Heretic is the ideal partner to position this bold debut by Kai Stänicke on the international stage. Their deep commitment to auteur-driven cinema and instinct for emerging voices give us full confidence that the film is in the best of hands. Complementing our strong collaboration with German distributor DCM, this partnership creates an ideal constellation to bring ‘Trial of Hein’ to a global audience.”
After studying film, and training at X Filme Creative Pool, Stänicke worked as an assistant director before moving into his own projects. His shorts won recognition from Saatchi & Saatchi, Berlinale Talents and Nespresso Talents, and his debut feature “Trial of Hein” received support from Berlinale’s Script Station and the Wolfgang Kohlhaase Scholarship.
As well as “Trial of Hein,” Heretic is handling international sales for the upcoming romance film “Twice Over,” starring Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Bergman Island”) and Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things,” “The Souvenir Part II”), and is also a co-producer on Berlinale Competition title “Dust” by Anke Blondé.
