“The Handmaid’s Tale” star O-T Fagbenle is reacting to Elisabeth Moss’s Emmys snub for the Hulu show’s sixth and final season.
“It’s a tragedy,” he told me Tuesday at the “Splitsville” premiere at AMC The Grove in Los Angeles. “It’s an absolute tragedy. I just think she’s incredible.”
Moss starred in the award-winning series as Offred/June Osbourne, a Handmaid who becomes a resistance fighter against Gilead.
She was previously nominated four times in the outstanding lead actress in a drama series four times, taking home the prize once in 2017. She also won an Emmy as a producer for outstanding drama series that same year.
The final season earned one nomination for Cherry Jones for outstanding guest actress in a drama series, a category she won in 2019.
In an interview with Variety’s Daniel D’Addario in May before the nominations were announced, Moss said, “It’s not a part of my life, this show — it has been my life for nine years. I’m so close to it, and so close to June that I don’t know how to talk about it, because there’s no separation.”
The Emmys will be handed out on Sept. 14 in Los Angeles.
“Splitsville” follows two couples, Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Michael Angelo Covino) and Ashley (Adria Arjona) and Carey (Kyle Marvin). Their lives unravel when Ashley and Carey break up and it’s revealed that Julie and Paul have an open relationship.
Fagbenle appears in the film as a friend who Julie runs into at an amusement park.
“I read [the script] and I was like this is so hilarious,” he said. “It’s also of the moment. I have so many friends who are talking about these things. A lot of people are talking about monogamy and relationships and the challenges of that. It seems to be one of the topics of the day.”
“Splitsville” is in select theaters starting Friday and everywhere Sept. 5.
