Rolling Stone Films and Documentary+ will screen two new shorts at the 2025 DOC NYC festival: The Spiritual Advisor, about a priest and activist who works with death row inmates; and Oh Yeah, which digs into the cultural history of Yello’s 1985 song of the same name, an offbeat one-hit wonder that became synonymous with Eighties excess.
The Spiritual Advisor, which was directed by Joel Fendelman, will have its world premiere on Nov. 16 and it’s slated for a wider release in Spring 2026. Oh Yeah, which was directed Nick Canfield, will screen Nov. 13 and has been selected for DOC NYC’s Short List: Shorts, one of the most prestigious honors at the festival. The film will have its official streaming release Nov. 25 on Rolling Stone and Documentary+.
“Having two films at DOC NYC speaks to the breadth of stories Rolling Stone Films is championing — from cultural touchstones that shaped pop history to deeply personal, urgent portraits of the world today,” Rolling Stone Films head, Alexandra Dale, said in a statement. “Each of these films reflects the creative spirit and journalistic curiosity at the heart of the Rolling Stone brand.”
“DOC NYC is where the best in documentary storytelling comes to life, and we’re thrilled to see both The Spiritual Advisor and Oh Yeah on this year’s lineup,” added Justin Lacob, president and co-founder of Documentary+. “It’s a huge moment for Documentary+ and Rolling Stone Films — and a perfect stage to introduce these powerful, distinctive stories to the world.”
To accompany the news, Rolling Stone is premiering a new trailer for Oh Yeah, which digs into the singular sonic resonance and cultural legacy of Yello’s smash. Created by Swiss musicians Dieter Meier and Boris Blank, “Oh Yeah” blew up thanks to its use in films like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Secret of My Success, and has remained a cultural touchstone for 40 years.
The clip teases interviews with Reggie Watts, Alan Ruck (who played Cameron in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), music exec Merck Mercuriadis, as well as Meier and Blank. “Nobody expected this, it was a very strange album song,” Meier says of the track. Blank adds, “The success of this track was so iconic… it keeps the circus of Yello still alive.”
The Spiritual Advisor, meanwhile, chronicles the work of Rev. Jeff Hood and was inspired by Brenna Ehrlich’s recent Rolling Stone story, “The Last Face Death Row Inmates See.” The film follows Hood as he travels to Oklahoma in September 2024 to advocate for a stay of execution for an inmate, and then accompany the man as the state carries out its sentence.
