The Nasdaq was down 0.2% even though about 55% of its stocks were trading higher. The S&P 500 was down 0.1%, with almost exactly half of its stocks rising and half falling. The Dow was off 5 points, or flat, with 15 of its 30 stocks rising.
Five of the 11 major S&P 500 sectors were rising on the day, led by industrials, health care, consumer staples, and consumer discretionary. Tech, materials, utilities, and energy were all down 0.3%, while real estate, down 0.6%, and communication services, down 1%, were the big laggards.
