Sally Field Thought Robin Williams ‘Wasn’t Funny’ on ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’

Sally Field said during a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” that she didn’t find her “Mrs. Doubtfire” co-star Robin Williams funny while shooting the 1993 comedy.

“Because I would never laugh, ever,” Field recalled. “And everybody else was laughing and carrying on.”

Field said that Williams, who prided himself on making his scene partners laugh with his improvising, grew frustrated that she was immune to his jokes.

“It drove him mad, actually,” Field said. “It wasn’t funny. It just wasn’t funny.”

She later added, “Robin was always trying something different to make me laugh. It was so unfunny. I can’t begin to tell you. And then Pierce, wonderful Pierce Brosnan, we were sitting at a table at the restaurant, and he made a fart noise on his arm. And I was gone. That was it.”

“Mrs. Doubtfire” is considered a classic comedy of the early ‘90s and one of the best in Williams’ filmography. It followed Williams as struggling actor and divorcee Daniel Hillard, who goes undercover as a British nanny so he can spend more time with his kids in his ex-wife’s home. Field played the ex-wife, Miranda Hilliard, and Brosnan played her budding love interest, Stu.

Williams was found dead in his home in Tiburon Calif. in August 2014. He was 63 years old. The cause of death was suicide via asphyxiation, according to the Tiburon coroner’s office.

Some of Williams’ other best known works include “Popeye,” “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “The Fisher King,” “Hook,” “Jumani,” “The Birdcage,” “Dead Poets Society” and “Aladdin.” His role in 1997’s “Good Will Hutning earned him an Oscar for best supporting actor.
