Sukhwinder Singh, the key witness in a corruption case involving the arrest of four police personnel last year, was travelling with a friend in this car when the assault took place at 7.15pm on Thursday.

Sukhwinder, the key witness in a corruption case involving the arrest of four police personnel last year, was travelling with a friend when the assault took place at 7.15pm.

Kapurthala senior superintendent of police Gaurav Toora said that a case under the Arms Act, physical assault, and criminal intimidation has been registered against unidentified persons. He said police have gathered technical leads and the assailants will be arrested.

In his complaint, Sukhwinder said that minutes after the firing, he received a call and a voice note from a foreign number threatening him and his family with dire consequences if he did not provide a statement in favour of the four suspended police personnel in court.

Sukhwinder has handed over the call details and voice note to the police.

The case dates back to May 23 last year, when Phagwara crime investigation agency (CIA) in-charge Bisman Sahi, ASIs Nirmal Singh and Jaswinder Singh, and constable Jagroop Singh were arrested for reportedly accepting a 2.5 lakh bribe to release Sukhwinder, a drug supplier, without action. While the officers originally claimed he had escaped their custody, an inquiry ordered by deputy inspector general (DIG) Naveen Singla found the team had contacted Sukhwinder’s family and in-laws to negotiate the bribe.

Following this, Sukhwinder became the primary witness in the ongoing legal proceedings against the officers.
