You won’t look back in anger but warm nostalgia while perusing through a new collection of raw photos of Oasis, released by Sonic Editions this month. The lineup of photos, shot throughout the band’s heyday, comes in time for the iconic rock band’s long-awaited reunion tour.
The photos, a mix of black-and-white and colored shots, track Liam and Noel Gallaghers’ rise as they shaped the Britpop genre from their hometown in Manchester to sold-out arenas across the world. At the core of the release lies the unmistakable vision of Michael Spencer Jones, whose collaboration with Oasis yielded some of the era’s most arresting album art. From the raw innocence of the “Definitely Maybe” cover (a Beatles-inspired photo shot from the living room floor of Bonehead’s apartment) to the blurred energy of “Morning Glory” and the Mohican-brushed bravado of “Be Here Now,” Spencer Jones encapsulated the mood of, perhaps, the last bastion of the sex, drugs and rock n’ roll era.
Standout selections include the Oasis at Maine Road print, immortalizing their vast 1996 homecoming performance at Manchester City’s stadium in 1996, where Noel famously greeted the crowd by shouting “This is history!” Elsewhere, the Oasis at Columbia Hotel captures the sunglass-donning brothers the morning after they were famously banned for a lifetime from the London hotel for trashing their rooms during a drug-riddled night.
Other photos, captured by iconic photographers such as Jay Brooks, Stefan de Batselier and Michael Robert Williams, see the brothers on stage, in the studio and smoking cigarettes backstage.
After officially splitting up in 2009, and a 15-year long feud between the Gallagher brothers, Oasis officially reunited for a 14-show jaunt this summer. The Oasis Reunion Tour is now on its North American run, with shows set through the end of November. Find out the best way to buy affordable Oasis tickets here.
