ITV Sets Terry Butcher Documentary ‘Invisible Wounds’ on Former Captain

ITV has commissioned a feature documentary about former England captain Terry Butcher from “McEnroe” producer Sylver Entertainment.

Directed by Stuart Burley, “Terry Butcher: Invisible Wounds” will follow Butcher’s journey from extraordinary highs to tragic lows, including the loss of his son Chris, his PTSD and recovery. The doc marks Burley’s directorial feature debut.

Butcher is one of soccer’s icons: he captained for England 77 times and led his local team, Ipswich Town, to success on the European stage. But none of that could make up for the personal loss he experienced following the death of his British Army veteran son Chris, who died after experiencing severe PTSD.

The film will chart Butcher’s life on and off the pitch, including the profound impact of losing his son, as well as his subsequent work with peer-support organization Combat2Coffee.

“I wore the Three Lions shirt with pride, and I would have given anything for my country,” said Butcher. “But nothing could have prepared me for losing Chris. This film is about making sure his life — and what we went through — means something. If it helps even one person realize they’re not alone, then it’s done its job.”

Burley said: “Terry Butcher, the footballer, the warrior, is a great story on its own, an iconic figure, one of only three men to lead England in a World Cup semi-final. But the story I wanted to tell is far deeper, that of a father and son who captained their country. This is a film about bravery, grief and hope. The strength Terry has shown in making this has been inspiring. The wounds will never heal, but with a newfound purpose, he is showing courage far beyond a bloodied head.”

The doc, produced by John Grint, is set to get a theatrical release with a premiere in the U.K. in May followed by regional screenings. It will then air on ITV and ITVX in June, ahead of England’s opening match at the World Cup. Syver’s Victoria Barrell and Simon Lazenby exec produce. Ipswich Town Football Club sponsor Paul Hamilton, who is also CEO of Halo Solutions, financed the film.

ITV Sport’s assistant commissioner Richard Botchway, who commissioned the film for ITV, said: “Terry Butcher is one of the defining figures of English sport, a symbol of commitment and resilience. But this film reveals a different kind of courage: the courage to speak openly about grief, trauma and loss. At a time when the nation comes together around football, this story brings a deeper conversation into the spotlight, one that ITV is proud to platform.”

Barrell added: “Our focus has always been to explore the human story behind sporting greatness. With Terry, that meant telling a story far beyond football — one about loss, resilience and purpose. We’re proud to bring this to audiences with ITV at a moment when its message feels especially urgent.”
