Through never-before-seen footage, personal videos and memories that range from neighborhood bars in Madrid to packed stadiums in Latin America, Los Mejores Años de Nuestra Vida (The Best Years of Our Life) reconstructs the history of Hombres G, a band that, generation after generation, continues to maintain a unique connection with its audience.
The documentary — an original production by Movistar Plus+ directed by Charlie Arnaiz and Alberto Ortega that premiered on May 8 in cinemas across Spain — features testimonies from artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Ana Torroja, Carlos Vives, Carín León and Carlos Rivera, who speak about the influence of Hombres G’s music in their lives and beyond. (There’s no release date in the U.S. or Latin America so far).
The project also includes a new song of the same name, released on April 30, as well as a tour titled Los Mejores Años de Nuestra Vida, which kicks off this spring in Spain and will reach Latin America in October.
Included this year on Billboard’s list of the 50 Best Latin Rock Bands of All Time, Hombres G was formed in Madrid in 1982 and quickly got young people jumping on both sides of the Atlantic with catchy tunes like “Devuélveme a Mi Chica,” “Marta Tiene un Marcapasos,” “Venezia” and “El Ataque de las Chicas Cocodrilo.”
The group’s fresh, carefree style not only set trends but became a standard of Spanish pop-rock, with upbeat guitar-driven rhythms, humorous lyrics and David Summers’ unmistakable voice. Four decades later, its original lineup remains intact — Summers (vocals and bass), Rafa Gutiérrez (guitar), Dani Mezquita (guitar and keyboards) and Javi Molina (drums) — as they continue to tour extensively.
Here are five things we learned about Hombres G from the documentary Los Mejores Años de Nuestra Vida.
Hombres G was almost called something entirely different
Before settling on their final name, the band considered some rather outlandish options, such as “Bonito Redford,” “Chorizamen de Pus” or “Dos Hombres y Un Vespino.” “Hombres G” ended up winning out almost by default, inspired by an old American film noir movie.
The show that changed everything was also a disaster
The movie recalls the Hombres G concert on October 19, 1984, at Sala Autopista in Madrid, which was conceived almost as a last-ditch effort before giving up on music. Javier Molina passed out from being drunk, David Summers’ bass cable broke, and the band itself remembers that night as an absolute disaster. The next day, nevertheless, they received a call from Paco Martín, founder of the independent label Twins, who decided to take a chance on them.
“Devuélveme a Mi Chica” started with a cassette left at a radio station in the wee hours
Luis Vaquero, a former DJ at LOS40 Principales, recalls how a fan showed up at the radio station in the wee hours with a cassette of “Devuélveme a Mi Chica.” He played it on the air, and the station’s phone lines were overwhelmed. Dani Mezquita had the date written down in a planner: April 2, 1985.
The price of fame
Los Mejores Años de Nuestra Vida highlights the toll taken by the phenomenon of fandom and the constant exposure the band faced. There were particularly tough moments: threats, objects thrown on stage and various health and anxiety issues experienced by its members behind the scenes. Over the years, that strain also ended up affecting the group’s motivation and ultimately led to the breakup of Hombres G in the ’90s.
But friendship eventually brought them back together
The return of Hombres G in 2002 began as a proposal from Warner Mexico, but when the four musicians saw each other again after almost a decade without speaking, they discovered it was as if no time had passed. Since then, they haven’t stopped, and today they convey the feeling of a band that, more than 40 years later, is still living this journey with the excitement of their early years.
The film arrives just before the Los Mejores Años de Nuestra Vida tour, which kicks off on May 16 in Albacete, Spain. In October, it will head to Latin America with stops in Mexico, Colombia and Peru, before closing out the year with two consecutive nights at the Movistar Arena in Madrid.
