Charlie Kirk has been shot at a speaking event at Utah Valley University.
The conservative political activist was about 20 minutes into a presentation witnesses heard gunfire from a nearby building, a spokesperson for the school told NBC News.
Kirk, a co-founder of the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA, was the only person shot in the incident, the spokesperson said.
“This is an on going situation,” the organization’s public relations manager Aubrey Laitsch said in a statement. “We can confirm that Charlie Kirk has been shot. He is in the hospital, and we are praying for him at this time.”
Videos circulating on social media showed the 31-year-old standing under a tent while speaking to the crowd. After a shot rang out, he physically recoiled and slumping down in his seat.
In the wake of the shooting, President Donald Trump shared on Truth Social, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”
Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance wrote on Twitter (formerly X), “Dear God, protect Charlie in his darkest hour.”
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle also offered their support, with Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene writing on X, “Charlie Kirk has been shot! Pray for him!”
