A year after the Song L GT was revealed, BYD’s electric GT was spotted in public for the first time.
When is BYD launching the Song L GT?
BYD first launched the Song L EV in 2023, an all-electric mid-size SUV that’s about the size of the Tesla Model Y.
Last July, a new Song L EV GT model was revealed as part of a batch of new energy vehicles (NEVs) approved for sale by China’s Ministry of Information Technology (MIIT).
BYD calls the Song L EV a shooting-brake electric SUV with a sporty coupe-like crossover design. Measuring 4,840 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,560 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm, it’s slightly bigger than the Tesla Model 3.
The new GT variant is the same size as the standard Song L EV, but has a few design changes, including a modified front end and a new GT badge on the rear to differentiate it.
BYD’s electric GT was listed with three different drivetrains: two single-motor models and one dual-motor variant. Single-motor variants had up to 228 hp (170 kW) and 308 hp (230 kW), respectively. Meanwhile, the AWD version was listed with a combined 523 hp (390 kW).
A year after it was cleared for sale, the Song L GT was captured in public for the first time. The new images from Weibo blogger SugarDesign show BYD’s new Song L GT without disguise for the first time.

BYD has yet to reveal any details, including prices or battery specs. The current Song L EV starts at just 189,800 yuan ($28,000) with a CLTC driving range of up to 411 miles (662 km).
The GT version is expected to adopt BYD’s new Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology to improve driving range and enable it to recharge in as little as five minutes.
BYD is now ramping up battery production after demand for vehicles equipped with the new tech has exceeded expectations, so the Song L GT could have been delayed as it prioritizes other models.
