For a few years, there was no hotter topic in British politics than bankers’ bonuses. They were used as proof of everything that had gone wrong pre-2008. The public mood was summed up by that Harry Enfield sketch of a red-jumpered Question Time audience member that, comedic cliche though it may have become, still makes me belly-laugh.
