The 62nd Golden Horse Awards has unveiled its nominees, with Taiwanese drama “A Foggy Tale” leading the pack with 11 nominations across major categories including best narrative feature, director, and acting honors.
The Golden Horse Awards are considered the most prestigious awards for films made in all the different variants of the Chinese language. The competition drew 593 submissions this year, comprising 80 narrative features, three animation features, 64 documentary features, 310 live action short films, 79 documentary short films and 57 animated short films.
“Left-Handed Girl” follows closely with nine nominations, including best narrative feature, supporting performances, new director, and technical categories. Two films tied with eight nods each: “Mother Bhumi” earned recognition across narrative feature, director, leading actress and technical categories, while “Family Matters” secured nominations for acting performances, new director and adapted screenplay.
The best narrative feature race features “A Foggy Tale,” “Left-Handed Girl,” “Mother Bhumi,” “Queerpanorama” and “The Waves Will Carry Us.”
Competing for best director are Chen Yu-hsun (“A Foggy Tale”), Tsao Shih-han (“Before the Bright Day”), Lau Kek-huat (“The Waves Will Carry Us”), Jun Li (“Queerpanorama”) and Chong Keat-aun (“Mother Bhumi”).
Best leading actor nominees include Richie Koh (“A Good Child”), Will Or (“A Foggy Tale”), Chang Hsiao-chuan (“Deep Quiet Room”), Chang Chen (“Lucky Lu”) and Lan Wei-hua (“Family Matters”).
The best leading actress category features Caitlin Fang (“A Foggy Tale”), René Liu (“Unexpected Courage”), Ariel Lin (“Deep Quiet Room”), Alexia Kao (“Family Matters”) and Fan Bingbing (“Mother Bhumi”).
The festival also announced gaffer Joy Chung as this year’s Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year. According to the jury citation, Chung “has served many fellow filmmakers reliable support and inspirations with her exquisiteness and concentration, and such a dedication spanned across diverse generations and genres.” Her recent work includes “A Foggy Tale” and “Unexpected Courage.”
Actor Chen Shu-fang will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The awards ceremony will take place Nov. 22, at Taipei Music Center. All nominated films will screen at the Golden Horse Film Festival, which kicks off Nov. 6.
