“Arenas,” a film set in the world of professional soccer starring Édgar Ramírez (“Carlos”), has been acquired for distribution across Europe.
Paradise City Sales (formerly Memento International) has sold the movie to a raft of territories, including Italy (Unicorn in collaboration with 102 Distribution), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo), Greece (Neo Films), Bulgaria (Beta Films), Hungary (Cinetel), Czech Republic (Pilot / Mimesis), Eastern Europe (HBO), Latin America (Encrypta) and Airlines (Anuvu).
Camille Perton’s feature debut, “Arenas” also stars Iliès Kadri (“Nobody’s Hero”), Sofian Khammes (“November”) and Lorenzo Zurzolo (“EO”).
The film follows Brahim, a rising soccer star who is about to sign his first contract at his prestigious hometown club. But when a mysterious and powerful agent disrupts the negotiations, Brahim discovers the shady side of the business. Torn between loyalty and money, he will engage in a race against time to claim his destiny. Filming took place in Lyon, Monaco, Nice and Baku in Azerbaijan.
“Arenas” is produced by Eve Robin and Judith Lou Lévy for Les Films du Bal, the independent company behind Mati Diop’s Cannes prizewinner “Atlantics” and Nadav Lapid’s latest film “Yes.”
Memento International previously described “Arenas” as “an intense thriller set behind the scenes of the football business, a world with its own rules where all dirty tricks are allowed, much like in all the great mafia movies.” Perton, meanwhile, is “a powerful new female voice in the French cinema landscape,” the company said.
Perton previously delivered the short “Passez les champs champs” and has collaborated on the artistic direction of several theatrical productions.
