Anderson .Paak is the consummate collaborator, known for working with the likes of Bruno Mars, Flying Lotus, and Dr. Dre. But there’s one collaborator who almost slipped through the cracks: Andre 3000.
As AP (as he’s known to most around him) explained during a panel at Jameson Distilled Sounds, Andre 3000 recorded a verse for “Come Home” — then asked for it to be taken off. It took a nudge from Dr. Dre to save the track, which became the opening song on the 2019 album Ventura.
Jameson Distilled Sounds is the whiskey label’s collaborative music platform, bringing artists from around the world for a unique experiment. Each artist is paired up with another for a cross-genre collaboration, with a tight weeklong series of sessions for each duo to record a new track.
Jameson tapped AP for the second year in a row, with the Grammy-winning artist sitting in on sessions, participating in panels, and even performing live to help the artists along in the creative process. The sessions were held in Ireland’s scenic rural district of County Cavan, amidst a backdrop of rolling fields and uncharacteristically blue skies.
During the Sleeve Notes panel at Jameson Distilled Sounds, Anderson .Paak explained the process behind creating “Come Home,” including the particular challenge of pinning down the ever-elusive rapper (and flutist) Andre 3000. He also presented the artists with a unique challenge, giving them stems to “Come Home,” and prompting them to put their own spin on the track.
Originally, the groups of artists were presented with an open-ended remix challenge, left to rework “Come Home” in their own way. But AP decided to up the ante, giving each group a genre to work in, ranging from pop punk to trap to “stomp clap” folk. The results — given the tight 45-minute deadline — were impressively polished, showing off a classic track in a new light.
