Sawyer Hemsley is opening up about his sexuality.
The Crumbl Cookies founder came out as a gay, explaining that he chose to share the news after there was speculation about him online which he felt could have been “harmful.”
“Instead of letting others write my story, I want to share it in my own words,” Sawyer wrote on Instagram Aug. 25. “Over the past few years I’ve come to understand and accept that I’m gay.”
The 33-year-old added, “It’s taken me a long time to really process this part of myself and even longer to feel comfortable enough to say it out loud.”
Sawyer—who founded Crumbl in 2017 alongside cousin Jason McGowan in Logan, Utah—said that coming to terms with his sexuality has “been overwhelming and, at times, scary,” but has ultimately “brought me peace, joy, and authenticity that I wouldn’t trade for anything.”
He also made mention of his Mormon upbringing, noting that he “grew up with values and beliefs that I still deeply love and respect, which made this journey more complicated.”
