A few weeks ago, Waymo announced that it was beginning operations, slowly and carefully, in five more cities. This week, the company announced that service is now fully autonomous and underway 24/7 in Orlando, Florida, and San Antonio, Texas.

Now at 10 cities with fully autonomous robotaxis in operation, Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov points out that the company has doubled the number of cities where its fully autonomous robotaxis are operating within just a few weeks. He mentions that “exponential scaling” is ongoing and they plan to enter more cities soon.

“Doubling cities quickly shows Waymo’s system handles diverse environments without major retraining or delays,” one person commented in response. Another commenter asked, “When will you serve each of these markets with thousands of vehicles? Right now SF is the only market with anywhere close to a sufficient number of vehicles!”

That’s not the end yet, though. A few hours ago, Waymo shared that the New York City Department of Transportation had extended its autonomous driving permit through March 31, 2026. “While there is not yet a legal path to operating in New York, we’re excited to continue laying the groundwork for serving New Yorkers in the future.” So, no robotaxis in New York yet, and not even a clear legal way to get there, but … progress.

Is exponential scaling going to really be ongoing? If so, how many cities will Waymo be operating in next December? And how many Waymo robotaxis will be on the road?
