Miranda also announced that the hit Broadway musical will be presented in movie theaters for its 10th anniversary

Lin-Manuel Miranda stopped by The Tonight Show to discuss Hamilton heading to movie theaters and took the opportunity to perform a medley of songs from the musical using classroom instruments.

The musicians and composer was joined by host Jimmy Fallon and house band the Roots for the lively performance, which included popular songs “Alexander Hamilton” and “My Shot.” Everyone wore a costume for the occasion and used classic childhood instruments like a triangle and a kazoo.

Miranda also sat down with Fallon to reflect on the 10th anniversary of Hamilton being on Broadway. “I just was so relieved it was out of my head and on a stage,” Miranda recalled of the debut. “It took me like seven years to write this thing… I’m just incredibly proud.”

He also remembered Prince coming to see the musical, noting, “I didn’t perform that night.” Miranda told Fallon he was deejaying a friend’s wedding and missed out on a party Prince had for the cast. “The entire cast was up all night partying with Prince… It’s the FOMO of my life.”

Miranda later revealed that the filmed version of the musical will head to movie theaters on Sept. 5. “We filmed most of the original cast performing in Hamilton in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted,” Miranda announced. “But, Sept. 5, you will be able to see Hamilton in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico.”
