The Tony Awards Administration Committee met Thursday to rule on eligibility for five Broadway productions, confirming where several shows and artists will compete at the 79th annual Tony Awards.
The committee, which determines category placement and other eligibility questions, made its decisions for the 2025-26 season for “Oedipus,” “Chess,” “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),” “Marjorie Prime” and “Bug.”
Among the determinations, “Oedipus” will be eligible for best revival of a play, with Robert Icke eligible as author. “Marjorie Prime” and “Bug” will also be eligible for best revival of a play, with Jordan Harrison and Tracy Letts eligible as authors, respectively.
“Chess” drew multiple rulings from the committee. Danny Strong will be eligible for best book of a musical for the new book; David Rockwell (scenic designer) and Peter Nigrini (video designer) will be jointly eligible for best scenic design of a musical; and Brian Usifer will be eligible for best orchestrations.
In performance categories, Christiani Pitts will be eligible for lead actress in a musical for “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).” Additionally, Sam Tutty will be eligible for lead actor in a musical for the same production. For “Bug,” Carrie Coon and Namir Smallwood will both be eligible for lead actress and actor in a play.
All other eligibility for the productions discussed will remain consistent with opening night credits.
The eligibility cut-off for the 2025-2026 Broadway season is April 26, with nominations set to be announced May 5. The ceremony will air live coast-to-coast on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
