The first EV with semi-solid-state EV batteries launching in Europe

After introducing the first mass-produced EV with a semi-solid-state battery, MG Motor said it will bring the new battery tech to Europe by the end of 2026. In China, the new MG4 with a semi-solid-state battery starts at under $15,000. Although not that cheap, the new EV is expected to remain affordable in Europe.

SAIC Motors, MG’s parent company, launched the new MG4 at the Chengdu Auto Show last year, calling it “the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” electric vehicle.

After deliveries began in China in December, MG announced it would bring the new batteries to Europe by the end of 2026.

MG is “setting a new benchmark,” the company said as the first manufacturer to achieve mass production of semi-solid-state EV batteries.

The new battery tech enables longer driver ranges, faster charging speeds, enhanced safety, and improved performance in cold weather. At the same time, the solid-state electrolytes within each cell form a protective layer that extends battery life.

MG said its new semi-solid-state battery tech, MG SolidCore Battery, has been “refined to accommodate regional road conditions, climate variations, and regulatory requirements.”

Although the company didn’t reveal specifics, the new MG4 uses a 53.95 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion battery, delivering a CLTC range of 530 km (330 miles) in China. It starts at just 102,800 yuan ($14,500).

The MG4 EV Urban is expected to launch in Europe with the same battery, but on the WLTP scale, range will likely drop to around 400 km (248 miles).

MG has yet to reveal prices, but the semi-solid-state battery EV is expected to start at about the same price as the current MG4 Urban at around £23,495 ($31,300). The MG4 Urban EV, now on sale, features a 53.9 kWh LFP battery and delivers up to 258 miles of WLTP range.

The new semi-solid-state EV batteries will soon debut in other MG vehicles like the recently revealed MG 4X electric SUV.

While MG is bringing its new battery tech to Europe, several automakers are now testing solid-state EV batteries in prototypes.
