There’s a new pair of earbuds released seemingly every day, but few releases shake up the audio world quite like Technics’ EAH-AZ100 earbuds. While the name may not roll off the tongue, the earbuds caught the ear of audio enthusiasts thanks to their exceptional audio quality. Released in January, Technics’ packed decades of audio experience into a pocket-friendly package. Here’s why Technics’ EAH-AZ100 earbuds are one of the best buys for the music-lover in your life — including yourself.

What to Know About Technics

Founded in Japan in 1965, Technics is best known for its turntables. The brand’s most famous model, the Technics SL-1200, features a durable industrial design and a direct-drive motor, making it a staple among DJs and a contemporary icon. But venerated home audio brands that make the leap into personal audio don’t always succeed — Technics managed to get it right with the EAH-AZ100, thanks to the comfortable design, reliable app, and portable charging case. But where it really shines is the sound.

Sound Quality

Technics used unique “Magnetic Fluid” drivers from its in-ear monitors in designing the EAH-AZ100 for minimal distortion. The goal, in Technics’ words, is reference-class sound, which allows audio enthusiasts to hear songs as close to the recorded versions as possible.

In addition to the high-end drivers, the EAH-AZ100 earbuds feature LDAC high-res wireless audio, Sony’s codec that allows for high-resolution audio over Bluetooth. The earbuds also feature robust noise-canceling performance, and the ANC and EQ can be customized in the Technics app.

Design

Beyond sound quality, there’s an attention to detail that makes these earbuds among the best of the year. They’re lightweight but fit securely in the ear and feature high-quality microphones for phone calls. The case itself is compact and easy to carry, and it features wireless charging. As for battery life, you get up to 12 hours with ANC off and up to 29 hours with the case.

Ultimately, there’s a lot to like about Technics’ EAH-AZ100 earbuds — from design to audio performance. And it doesn’t hurt that they’re on sale ahead of the holiday season.
