At a time when various automakers are struggling to meet their EV sales targets (including EV giant Tesla itself, which just can’t find a way to return to sales growth), Volvo Cars has a big hit on its hands and is actually expanding production as a result.

Naturally, the bulk of its demand is coming from some European countries known to love a Volvo and known to love EVs. Volvo Cars says that it is expanding production volumes “on the back of strong customer demand for the car in its home market of Sweden and other key markets such as Germany.” Additionally, note that this comes just after launch.

“Barely a month after the car’s public reveal, nearly all major European markets are reporting retail orders considerably higher than internal forecasts. This includes over 3,000 orders in Sweden alone, helped by a new Care offer designed for simplicity, transparency and precision, as well as the inclusion of three years of free home charging.”

Comparing the market’s response to the EX60 with the market’s response to the EX30 a few years ago just after it was launched, the EX60 is apparently bringing in a lot more orders than the smaller EX30 was. This is surprising in part because of the mass-market, lower-cost class the EX30 is in, which is a sweet spot in Europe in particular.

“While Volvo Cars will prioritise a steady and prudent ramp-up of EX60 production that aims to secure high-quality production, it is now planning an increase in production of the EX60 at its Torslanda plant in Sweden.

“Volvo Cars is currently engaged in a dialogue with relevant labour unions, with the aim of keeping the Torslanda open for one extra week in the summer, which would be the first time in the company’s history.”

Also, the EX60 isn’t even available to order in the US yet, only in Europe.

“That so many customers ordered the EX60 in the first month has surpassed our expectations, and it’s a good ‘problem’ to have,” says Erik Severinson, chief commercial officer at Volvo Cars. “We are very encouraged to see such strong demand for our game-changing electric SUV, and we are now reviewing our production plans for 2026, as we gear up for the start of customer car production next month.”

It’s nice to hear of an EV surpassing expectations, going off and surprising its creator with the level of demand it’s seeing. Kudos to Volvo Cars for the achievement.
