Usually, when a musician pops up on Jeopardy! it’s in the form of a clue (or, if you’re lucky like the Talking Heads, a whole category). Indie favorite Snail Mail made it onto the famed quiz show in a slightly different way, when a contestant who looks a whole lot like singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan popped up on this week’s Jeopardy! Champions Wildcard quarterfinals.
The contestant, Stella Trout, first appeared on Jeopardy! last June, when she won a pair of regular games. It was during that run that people who love both TV quiz shows and expertly crafted indie rock clocked that the software engineer from Texas was Jordan’s doppelgänger.
When Trout returned to Jeopardy! on Monday, Jan. 6, for the Champions Wildcard tournament, she chatted with host Ken Jennings about inspiring the very fun (though very niche) phenomenon. “People online said I looked a lot like this indie musician Snail Mail,” Trout said, noting that Jordan followed her on social media after seeing posts about their similar looks.
“Now we follow each other,” Trout added, “and I’m like, ‘Snail Mail, let me be your stunt double or something! Just put me in the video!’”
Jordan was also very enthused about Trout’s return to Jeopardy!, posting on her Instagram Story last night, “Twin is on jeopardy tonight again let’s go Stella Trout!!!!!” In a follow-up post, featuring a photo of Trout at the Jeopardy! lectern, Jordan wrote, “I love u twin.”
The especially good news for fans of Snail Mail and Trout is that Trout will get to continue her Jeopardy! Champions Wildcard run after prevailing in last night’s quarterfinals. Trout secured her victory after coming up big on a Final Jeopardy clue about guinea pigs, bringing her nightly total to $26,401. She’ll appear in the semifinal round, slated to start next week.
