The Emmy Awards category for best talk series shrank by one nominee this year — but the three shows up for the award are familiar veterans of the race.
The Daily Show (which won the award in 2024), Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will compete for the award at September’s Primetime Emmy ceremony. There had been some speculation that Hot Ones would make history by becoming the first YouTube show nominated, but Television Academy voters went for three perennial nominees.
ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! has now been nominated for best talk series (or its predecessor categories) for 14 consecutive years. CBS’ Late Show is on a nine-year streak, and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show is a 13-time winner in the category, including the last two years.
The smaller field for best talk series — it’s down from four nominees last year and five in 2023 — is due to a lower number of submissions in the category. Only 13 shows submitted for consideration this year, one short of the threshold to have four nominees. It also reflects a decline in the number of late-night shows on broadcast and cable networks in recent years.
NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers was also nominated in 2024 but missed the cut with this year’s smaller field. The other shows submitted were Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney (Netflix), Hart to Heart (Peacock), Have I Got News for You (CNN), Hot Ones, Midnight Snack With Julie Chan (streaming service Asian American Movies), Real Time With Bill Maher (HBO), The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (NBC), Very Important People (Dropout) and Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen (Bravo).
