Brandy is no stranger to putting it down on a track (no, literally) but the Grammy-winning singer is also laying it all out there in a new memoir that chronicles her journey from Hollywood child star to globally-acclaimed musician and actor.
Phases, which was released March 31, is billed as an “intimate biography of the multiplatinum legend and star of Moesha and Cinderella,” promising a “raw, intimate portrait” of Brandy’s life and career.
Though Brandy has amassed a host of accolades — including a recent star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — the singer writes about how the pressures of performing and living up to expectations eventually took a toll on her physical and mental health. Brandy also details the bullying she endured as a teenager, along with the many misconceptions she has had to clear up about her family, her relationships and her accomplishments.
Of course, the singer known as “the Vocal Bible” also reveals never-before-heard details about her most famous songs, and shares anecdotes about her well-publicized friendships with Monica and Whitney Houston.

Brandy first revealed that she was working on a memoir last January, calling it “one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life.” Indeed, the singer appeared on The View Wednesday and told the hosts that she was “nervous” about how the book would be received, adding that she still struggles with what people think of her, even to this day. “I don’t want to be judged, but that’s life and that happens,” she said.
“There are people out there who are just jealous sometimes,” quipped co-host Joy Behar. “So don’t pay attention.”
“Your story will help other people,” added Sunny Hostin.
“I believe that,” Brandy said. “I really believe that.”
