On Monday night, Trump took to Truth Social to announce that India and the US had sealed a trade deal. This deal, which was framed amid months of negotiations, comes amid tariff tensions between the two partners.
India was initially hit with a 25 percent tariff from the US, which was later increased to 50 percent due to India’s purchase of Russian oil. However, with a trade deal now in place between Washington and New Delhi, the reciprocal tariff rate stands at a firm 18 percent.
Trump’s announcement on Truth Social came right after newly-appointed US ambassador to India Sergio Gor revealed that the phone call had taken place between Trump and Modi.
