Ozzy Osbourne wore many faces throughout his life and career. The one on stage: hand on mic and mouth agape as he scream-sang the chorus to “Hole in the Sky.” In his Beverly Hills home, contorting his cheeks into absurd configurations until his kids had no choice but to reel over in laughter at their dad’s demented version of a dad joke — all captured for posterity in their Emmy-winning reality show, “The Osbournes.” And, behind the camera, striking his favorite pose: eyes crossed and tong jutted straight out in a wild, knowing look of mischief.
These many faces, and more, are celebrated in a new photo collection, unearthed by Sonic Editions following the metal icon’s death earlier this month. The lineup includes prints by music photographers Peter Anderson, who captured Black Sabbath during their 1987 tour; Steve Rapport, whose gorey, red-tinged behind-the-scenes shot of the “Bark at the Moon” music video sees Osbourne, unrecognizable, zombie-walking towards the camera; and, Stefan De Batselier, whose 1999 black-and-white photo of Osbourne peaking out from an under a curtain, tongue out, hasn’t been unearthed until now.
Sonic Editions, known for partnering with the world’s best photographers and picture archives to produce limited edition, gallery-quality photo prints, released the Ozzy Osbourne collection this week to celebrate the legacy of the late rocker. Each print is available in a range of sizes — from a small 14 x 11 inch to an extra large 37 x 26 inch.
The Black Sabbath frontman died last Thursday at the age of 76, following a yearslong battle with Parkinson’s disease. Two weeks prior, he took the stage for a final time at a festival titled “Back to the Beginning,” in his and the band’s hometown of Birmingham, England.
