Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to Italian director Virgilio Villoresi’s directorial debut, “Orfeo,” a dreamlike drama that premiered out of competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.
The U.S. deal for “Orfeo” was inked by Oscilloscope’s head of acquisitions, Aaron Katz, and Italy’s True Colours, which is selling the film at the EFM.
“This deal marks our first collaboration with the Oscilloscope team and we are thrilled it caught their eye, in particular the unique peculiarity of this film,” said True Colours’ head of sales, Francesca Tiberi in a statement. “We are confident this partnership will strengthen the movie’s exposure in the U.S.”
“Orfeo,” which is based on Italian author Dino Buzzati’s graphic novel “Poema a fumetti,” follows a solitary pianist who, since childhood, has imagined fantastic stories set in an abandoned villa across from his home. His life is transformed when a mysterious love draws him to a woman named Eura, following her through a small door in front of the abandoned villa. A strange and mesmerizing journey follows that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.
Milan-based Fantasmagoria produced “Orfeo,” which stars Luca Vergoni, Giulia Maenza, Aomi Muyock, and Vinicio Marchioni.
Commented Oscilloscope’s Katz: “Virgilio’s vision is a magical and fantastic retelling of the story of Orpheus. The artistry he implements brings to mind the work of cinema’s early masters and reminds you of what cinema was meant to be — a format that brings imagination and wonder to life. Audiences are in for a real treat.”
