Mel Gibson’s Resurrection of the Christ Broken Into Two Films

Lionsgate revealed Tuesday that Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated The Resurrection of the Christ is being broken up into two films. Part One will hit theaters on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, while Part Two will launch 40 days later on Ascension Day, which falls on May 6, 2027.

The Resurrection of the Christ Parts One and Two are Gibson’s follow-ups to his landmark film The Passion of the Christ, which until last year was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically and well as the highest-grossing indie title in history.

Gibson is producing the ambitious project with his partner at Icon Productions, Bruce Davey.

Passion of the Christ, which starred Jim Caviezel as Christ and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalen, was produced and self-financed by Gibson and his production company for a reported $30 million. The gamble on himself paid off when the film had an opening weekend of $83 million, took in $370 million in North American theaters and more than $610 million globally. It was, until last year, the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically, and the highest-grossing indie of all time.

Resurrection has been in the works for close to a decade and Gibson has stated in interviews that the aim is to have Caviezel reprise his role. Production will likely begin in late summer in European locations.

“For many, many people across the globe, The Resurrection of the Christ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson when announcing in May that Lionsgate was boarding the project. “Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker. My relationship with Mel and Bruce dates back 30 years, and I am thrilled to be partnering with them once again on this landmark event for audiences.”

More to come.
