Mazda’s new EZ-60 EV SUV sees early demand in China

As the first fully electric SUV from Mazda’s joint venture in China, Changan Mazda, the EZ-60 is a key piece to the automaker’s comeback.

After its debut on April 23, Changan Mazda announced that the EZ-60 had received over 10,000 pre-orders in just 24 hours. Last month, the tally reached over 20,000.

According to the latest update, Mazda’s new EV SUV has now racked up over 30,000 pre-orders. The company announced on Weibo on Tuesday that “Mazda EZ-60 blind orders have exceeded 30,000!” in just over two months.

The company stated that 66% of pre-order holders fall within the 25 -39 age range, describing it as “the light luxury choice for young people.”

One order holder, a post-doctoral student, said the advanced technology was what sold him. The EZ-60 features a high-tech interior with a 27″ curved touchscreen infotainment and a 100″ naked-eye 3D head-up (HUD) display.

Mazda is offering a unique “10 yuan purchase fund” to lure in potential buyers. Those who place a refundable 10 yuan ($1.40) deposit can watch their account grow every day.

Pre-order holders can complete tasks to earn additional bonuses, which they can then use toward the purchase of the vehicle.

Based on Changan’s hybrid platform, the EZ-60 is available with fully electric (EV) and extended-range powertrain options.

The EV variant is powered by a 77.9 kWh CATL LFP battery pack, which Mazda says provides a CLTC range of 600 km (372 miles). With a 1.5L gas engine, the extended-range version offers a combined range of over 1,300 km.

Mazda’s new electric SUV measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, which is slightly longer than the Tesla Model Y.

Changan Mazda is expected to officially launch the EZ-60 in September. Prices and more details will come closer to launch. Like the EZ-6 EV sedan, Mazda’s electric SUV will be sold in overseas markets, such as Europe. It will be known as the Mazda CX-6e.

Mazda’s EZ-6 is rebadged as the 6e in Europe. It’s available with two battery packs: 68.8 kWh or 80 kWh, providing a WLTP driving range of 479 km (300 miles) and 552 km (343 miles), respectively.
