Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan’s troubles get exponentially worse in Freaky Friday sequel, out this summer

What could be freakier than Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan playing a mother and daughter swapping places? The two of them, 22 years later, swapping places with Lohan’s character’s daughter and prospective stepdaughter, as the trailer for Freakier Friday shows.

The clip shows how the Freaky Friday sequel, which opens Aug. 8, begins with tension as Lohan’s character gets ready for a wedding, against her the wishes of her daughter (Julia Butters), to a British man (Manny Jacinto) who also has a daughter (Sophia Hammons). At the bachelorette party, a psychic (Vanessa Bayer) predicts the second swap, and mayhem ensues. The stepdaughter is now the grandma, and Lohan and her daughter have now switched bodies. Hear the screams for yourself in the two-minute clip.

The trailer’s highlights include the kids (as mom and step-grandma) conspiring to break up the wedding, Lohan (as daughter) having no idea how to look sexy (“You’re having a stroke,” a guy tells her), and Curtis (as step-granddaughter) lusting after teenage boy. “That’s my therapist,” exclaims the boy’s dad.

Filmmaker Nisha Ganatra (The High Note, Late Night) directed the movie. Jordan Weiss, who created the Kat Dennings TV series Dollface for Hulu and directed and co-wrote the Max romcom Sweethearts, wrote the screenplay. Several actors, including Mark Harmon and Stephen Tobolowsky, are reprising their roles from the original movie.

Curtis and Lohan both told The New York Times in 2023 that they were open to a sequel. “We would only make something that people would absolutely adore,” Lohan said. Meanwhile, Curtis got the wheels in motion after promoting Halloween Ends. While talking about the horror movie, she’d found lots of fans asking about Freaky Friday. “When I came back [from promoting the movie], I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made,’” she said.
