The 27-year-old died by accident earlier this month
Lil Jon‘s son, Nathan Smith (aka DJ Young Slade), died by accident of “drowning in the setting of psilocybin use,” according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner in Georgia. People reported the news on Friday, citing an autopsy report.
Psilocybin is the hallucinogenic agent found in magic mushrooms, which the report described as “a pharmacologically active hallucinogenic compound of psilocybin — hallucinogenic mushrooms.” The report noted wrinkling on Smith’s hands from water immersion, according to People.
Smith, who was 27, went missing on Feb. 3, and his body was recovered from a pond in Mayfield Park, Georgia, three days later. “Subject ran out of his house and has been missing since,” police said of Smith in an alert after he went missing. “Subject left on foot and does not possess a phone. He may be disoriented and in need of assistance. Family and friends are concerned for his safety.”
Police from Milton, an affluent suburb about 30 miles north of Atlanta, said at the time that they did not suspect foul play but were committed to investigating it fully.
“I am extremely heartbroken for the tragic loss of our son, Nathan Smith,” Lil Jon said in a statement at the time. “His mother, Nicole Smith, and I are devastated. Nathan was the kindest human being you would ever meet. He was immensely caring, thoughtful, polite, passionate, and warmhearted. He loved his family and the friends in his life to the fullest.”
In an Instagram post, Lil Jon said that Smith was laid to rest on Feb. 18. “I love you, son,” he wrote. “Life will never be the same without you. Allah, give me strength.”
