Laura Jane Grace Shares New Song ‘Wearing Black’ From ‘Adventure Club’

On her latest single “Wearing Black,” Laura Jane Grace declares: “My pride’s a riot, it’s not a parade.” The record’s accompanying Emily Esperanza-directed video gets the riot riled up in rooms full of sweaty bodies that took the leather and latex dress code quite seriously.

“Wearing Black” carves out a space for punks and goths in the sea of vivid colors that often define pride events. It represents a core element of Adventure Club, the forthcoming Laura Jane Grace in the Trauma Tropes’ album, out July 18.

“Adventure Club is frequently a record about learning to take up space, about feeling free to be yourself as the bullshit of our ahistoric moment mounts,” a release about the album reads. “Protest songs and personal tunes have never been a binary for Grace, and she delivers some of her most profound — and, yes, playful — work ever at that particular intersection here. But the most prominent thread through Adventure Club’s dozen tracks is one of evolution, of letting yourself become something new.”

“Wearing Black” follows the release of Adventure Club singles “Mine Me Mine,” “Active Trauma,” and “Your God (God’s Dick).” The 12-track LP was created during Grace’s month-long stint in Greece and draws inspiration from prominent tropes in Greek mythology.

“She talks often about her age, about nearing the second half of her 40s after a lifetime as a punk,” the release continues. “What does it mean, really, to remain a punk for 44 years? For Grace, it is the same as it’s always been — a resolve to question everything about oneself and the world around you and to allow yourself to evolve within that framework. Adventure Club epitomizes that spirit the way that the best of Laura Jane Grace’s music always has.”

Later this year, Grace will hit the road for an extended North American and Latin American tour with special guests Murder By Death, Rodeo Boys, Trapper Schoepp, and Team Nonexistent.
