Lainey Wilson gave the live debut of her new single “Somewhere Over Laredo” at the 2025 American Music Awards on Monday night.
Wilson took the stage alongside a pianist in a stunning white bell-bottomed suit with a flowy cape adorned by a silver belt buckle and matching mic stand. Dan + Shay introduced their “friend.”
“Caught me a red-eye flight out of Houston/Found me a window seat with a view/Headed out west for south California/One Tito’s in I’m thinking about you,” Wilson sang. “Knowing 20 minutes from now/I’ll be somewhere over Laredo/Dreaming ’bout those rodeo nights.”
Written by Wilson with frequent collaborator Trannie Anderson, and Dallas Wilson and Andy Albert, the song interpolates the melody of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” the centerpiece song of The Wizard of Oz, performed by Judy Garland.
“Somewhere Over Laredo” appears on an upcoming deluxe edition of Wilson’s 2024 album Whirlwind, out Aug. 22. Along with the single, the expanded track list includes new songs “King Ranch, King George, King James,” “Yesterday, All Day, Every Day,” “Peace, Love, and Cowboys,” and “Bell Bottoms Up,” which also doubles as the name of Wilson’s Nashville honky-tonk. Whirlwind was recently named Album of the Year at the 2025 ACM Awards, Wilson repeated as Entertainer of the Year too, and also performed with Reba McEntire and Miranda Lambert on McEntire’s new song “Trailblazer.”
At the 2025 AMAs, Wilson is up for Favorite Female Country Artist. Other nominees in the category include Beyoncé, Ella Langley, Kacey Musgraves, and Megan Moroney. The Favorite Male Country Artist nominees include Jelly Roll, Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Post Malone, and Shaboozey.
