Julie Bowen is happy she hasn’t been replaced.
While the Modern Family star is among the OG Happy Gilmore cast members joining Adam Sandler in the upcoming sequel, she initially thought her character would be overlooked in favor of a younger woman.
“I heard that it was happening and I thought, ‘Well I won’t be in it,'” Julie told The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet for Netflix’s Tudum event on May 31. “And that was okay, I was like, Virginia Venit, it’s been 30 years.”
As for who she expected she’d be replaced with, she imagined that the golf star “would have a hottie,” she explained, “like a cart girl.”
Julie—mom to Oliver, 18, and twins John and Gustav, 16—even quipped that when her eldest heard musings of a sequel, he had heard Sydney Sweeney would be taking Julie’s place as Happy’s girlfriend.
“I went, ‘I’m hurt, and I so respect that move,'” she explained of her reaction to her son’s rumor. “Of course, why wouldn’t you?”
