“Jojo Rabbit” star Archie Yates plays a teen who gets caught up in the dangers of the internet in the trailer for “Clout,” a new short film from director Jordan Murphy Doidge.
The Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying short follows 13-year-old Oskar (Yates), “whose desperate pursuit of attention spirals into something sinister,” according to a press release. “The short echoes themes explored in Netflix’s ‘Adolescence,’ situating it firmly within a global conversation about identity, vulnerability and the dark side of coming of age online.”
Alongside Yates, “Clout” also stars Anna Wilson-Jones (“Black Mirror”), Nadine Marshall (“Tatami”), Samuel Leakey (“Gretel & Hansel”), TikTok star Kit Price and newcomers Obi Oleforo and Ashwin Chandrasekaran.
Following its premiere at the HollyShorts Film Festival in August, “Clout” will tour cinemas around the U.K. in November in partnership with Everyman. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A with the cast, crew and mental health partners.
“Clout” was produced by Francis Chapman for Pimlico Pictures with Lindsay Cullen co-producing. The short has partnered with U.K. charities Family Lives, The Mix, Into Film and Arts Emergency in hopes of sparking dialogue around youth mental health and online safety.
Yates is best known for his performance as Yorki in Taika Waititi’s 2019 satirical black comedy “Jojo Rabbit,” which won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay and was nominated for best picture. For his work in the film, he was nominated for best young actor at the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards. His other credits include the film “Home Sweet Home Alone” and voice roles in the series “Wolfboy and the Everything Factory,” “Amphibia” and “Oni: Thunder God’s Tale.”
