Sony Pictures Television is shopping a project about the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein with Laura Dern attached to star, Variety has learned.
The limited series is based on the book “Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story” by Julie K. Brown, the Miami Herald journalist who put a renewed spotlight on Epstein and his crimes. Dern will star in the series as Brown.
The official description of the series describes it as “an explosive account of an investigative reporter exposing the secret plea deal between Epstein and federal prosecutors. Drawing from Brown’s experience as a groundbreaking reporter for the Miami Herald, the book and the limited series follow her relentless years-long investigation that identified 80 victims, persuaded key survivors to go on the record, and led to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s arrests.”
Sharon Hoffman (“Mrs. America,” “House of Cards”) is adapting the book for the screen and will serve as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Eileen Myers (“American Hostage,” “Masters of Sex”). Dern will executive produce in addition to starring. Adam McKay and Kevin Messick will executive produce via Hyperobject Industries, with Brown also executive producing.
Should the project find a home and go to series, which seems highly likely, it would be the first scripted series about the Epstein case. There have been multiple documentaries and documentary series about Epstein, who for years operated a high-profile sex trafficking ring involving some of the most powerful and influential people on earth.
It would be the latest series to tackle topical subject matter for McKay and Hyperobject. McKay first broke out with comedies like “Anchorman” and “Talladega Nights,” but has since been behind films like “The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up” as well as shows like “Succession.”
Dern is one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation across both TV and film. Dern is a nine-time Emmy Award nominee, winning the award for outstanding supporting actress in a limited series in 2017 for “Big Little Lies.” Her other nominations have come from her work on projects like “Palm Royale,” “The Tale,” and “Enlightened.” She is also a three-time Academy Award nominee, winning best supporting actress in 2020 for “Marriage Story.” Her other credits include the “Jurassic Park” franchise, 2019’s “Little Women,” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Dern is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. McKay is repped by CAA. Myers is repped by Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
