The big weakness Pakistan will look to target will like be India’s spinners in the middle overs. After India had taken 6 UAE wickets in the first 12 overs, they looked firm favourites to get a 300 run margin of victory with absolute ease – only to be frustrated by the seventh wicket stand as they played out more than 20 overs in conjunction, just blunting the ageing ball.

Of course, wickets will come if Pakistan look to attack, but it might just be a matter of which team can get more to happen in that phase of the match.

In the other group stage match of the opening day, Pakistan did what was expected of them as they swept aside Malaysia with ease. The smaller team was never in the picture: conceding 345, and then with bat, imploding and allowing Pakistan to absolutely massacre the batting and decimate them for 48. Two massive net-run-rate boosts for each of the teams.

Suryavanshi’s opening partner will be Mumbai and CSK batter Ayush Mhatre, who is also captaining this team. Given it was a good batting wicket with plenty of runs on offer on which everyone else succeeded, Mhatre would be kicking himself for a missed opportunity. Oddly, he continues to struggle in age groups ODI, despite clearly making the step up to the senior level very successfully. Looking to change that in this innings as his team’s captain.

It’s actually a little ridiculous: a 14 year old boy showcasing this kind of power and consistency in his hitting, against opponents who are invariably older than he is. 14 sixes in his knock on Friday, as he showed that there is no boundary in the world of cricket too big for him. What a truly insane statement to make for someone of his age, but that’s just the kind of hitting quality he has displayed in his extremely young career thus far. Long may it continue.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s 171 off just 95 deliveries was the headliner in an Indian batting performance in the tournament opener that saw almost every batter stand up and play the perfect sort of knock given what the situation demanded. There was naturally a quality gulf, but nevertheless, execution was spot-on from India’s colts in a record performance vs UAE.
