‘Harry Potter’ Series Casts Bel Powley, Daniel Rigby as The Dursleys

The “Harry Potter” TV series at HBO has found its Petunia and Vernon Dursley.

Variety has learned exclusively that Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will star as the elder Dursleys in the upcoming small screen adaptation of the J.K. Rowling book series. Yet to be cast is there son, Dudley.

Fans of the books will recall that Petunia was the sister of Harry’s mother, Lily. The Dursleys grudgingly take Harry in after his parents’ death, forcing him to live in a cupboard under the stairs and essentially treating him like a servant rather than their nephew. Petunia and Vernon were played by Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths in the “Harry Potter” film franchise.

As previously announced, Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Arabella Stanton is Hermione, and Alastair Stout is Ron. Other cast members include: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Powley’s recent TV credits include shows like “Masters of the Air,” “A Small Light,” and “The Morning Show.” Her film credits include “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” “White Boy Rick,” and “The King of Staten Island.” She is repped by UTA, Curtis Brown Group, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

Rigby most recently starred in shows such as “I, Jack Wright,” “Renegade Nell,” and “Tom Jones.” He is also set to appear in Amazon’s upcoming sci-fi series “Blade Runner 2099,” which continues the story of the film franchise. He won a BAFTA TV Award for best actor in 2011 for his starring role in “Eric and Ernie.”

He is repped by Independent Talent Group and Hamilton Hodell.

HBO is describing the show as a “faithful adaptation” of the globally recognized J.K. Rowling book series. “Exploring every corner of the wizarding world, each season will bring ‘Harry Potter’ and its incredible adventures to new and existing audiences,” per the official description.

The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
