‘Good Night and Good Luck,’ With George Clooney, Hits .9M

Good Night, and Good Luck continues its ascent, breaking another box office and its own record for highest-grossing play last week.

The play, starring George Clooney, brought in $3.9 million, close to $60,000 more than the prior week. The average ticket price was $314.60 and the show played to more than 100 percent capacity at the Winter Garden Theatre.

Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, yet again had the highest ticket price in the industry last week, at $374.17, as the production brought in $3.1 million and played to 100 percent capacity at the Barrymore Theatre.

The two were the top-grossing shows in the industry, followed by Wicked, with $2.58 million, The Lion King at $2.32 million and Glengarry Glen Ross with $2.3 million.

Sunset Blvd. played seven performances rather than the typical eight last week due to a sound issue at the St. James Theatre, thus decreasing its totals to $995,812.70 for the week. However, the show’s star, Nicole Scherzinger, sang to the audience at the canceled Wednesday matinee before they went home via a bullhorn. That megaphone was auctioned off to the audience Friday and raised $7,000 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Overall, industry totals were down close to 8 percent from the prior week, as a number of shows had heavily comped press performances and opening nights leading up to the Tony Awards eligibility cutoff.

As of April 27, all Broadway shows eligible for the 2024-2025 Tony Awards have opened. Last week saw the final rush, with six productions opening: Floyd Collins, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Just In Time, Dead Outlaw and Real Women Have Curves: The Musical.

Tony Award nominations are set to be announced May 1 by Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce, with the awards ceremony taking place at Radio City Music Hall on June 8.

Overall, the season is up 20 percent compared to this point last season. The season officially ends May 25.
