Global EV Sales — Plugin Vehicles Reach 28% Share!

Last Updated on: 4th August 2025, 06:03 pm

There were 1.8 million plugin vehicles registered worldwide in June.

Global plugin vehicle registrations were up 22% in June 2025 compared to June 2024. There were over 1.8 million registrations. BEVs grew 24% YoY to over 1.1 million units, compared to plugin hybrids growing 18% to around 600,000 units in the same period.

In the end, plugins represented 28% share of the overall auto market (18% BEV share alone), pulling the YTD numbers to 24% share (15% BEV).

20 Best Selling EV Models in the World in June

Regarding June’s best sellers, the big news is that the leader, the Tesla Model Y, had a positive month, growing 7% YoY thanks to some 127,000 registrations.

On the other hand, the Tesla Model 3 is in a never ending downward spiral, with the sedan seeing its deliveries drop by 28% in June to some 46,000 registrations, no doubt squeezed between the increased direct competition and the refresh of the Model Y, which has surely diverted many possible Model 3 clients to the crossover.

This slow performance has even allowed the BYD Seagull to beat the US sedan in a peak month and steal June’s bronze medal from Tesla.

Exports start to kick in

And it’s not like BYD’s little Lambo had to sweat too much. A year-best performance (50,930 units) was all it needed to beat the Model 3.

Interestingly, in June, one third of the Seagull registrations came from export markets, especially from Latin America, where Brazil (1,900 units) and Mexico (1,700) were the main markets.

Overseas markets are starting to become relevant for BYD. Besides the Seagull, other export-friendly models, like the Sealion 07, are starting to get significant volumes from export markets. As such, in the case of the sporty crossover, almost half of deliveries were in export markets, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, with the major markets being Australia (1,800 units) and Thailand (1,400).

“Go Global, Think Local” continues to be relevant. As such, BYD is expanding a business internationally, while tailoring products, services and marketing to meet the specific needs and preferences of each market. Economics 101, applied in practice. Congrats, BYD, you have succeeded where others have failed.

Elsewhere, there isn’t much to mention. The #5 Geely Xingyuan continued to ramp up, with a record 41,0001 registrations (its 5th record score in a row!), the new AITO M8 full size SUV jumped to #11 in only its 3rd month on the market thanks to 21,000 units, and the Leapmotor B10, the startup’s new crossover, joined the table for the first time in #20 thanks to 14,312 units, in only its 4th month on the market. It seems these two models look poised to become regular faces on the best sellers lists.

Besides these two … there were a lot of BYDs on the table. Like, A LOT. 11 models in total. The highlights were the #9 Dolphin — which, thanks to a recent refresh, scored over 24,000 deliveries, its best performance in 18 months — and the new Sealion 05 crossover, which ended the month at #17 thanks to a record 17,190 units.

Off the table, the highlights mostly came from the BYD furnace, with the new Seal 05 sedan hitting a record 11,424 sales while BYD’s premium brand FangChengBao had its Tai 03 compact SUV reach a record 12,017 sales in only its 3rd month on the market (we could have another representative from the BYD galaxy on the table soon).

Finally, the only good news coming from legacy OEMs was the continued ramp-up of the Skoda Elroq, with the Czech compact crossover closing in on the 5-digit mark with 9,928 deliveries in June.

Top 20 EV Models YTD

On the year-to-date (YTD) table, the Tesla Model Y and BYD Song held their firm grip on the top positions, while the Tesla Model 3 lost some ground to the #4 BYD Seagull, all while failing to gain significant ground over the #5 Geely Xingyue.

With the Tesla EV scoring 110,000 deliveries in Q2, fewer than both the Seagull (135,000) and the Xingyuan (116,000) in the same period, it seems likely that the BYD hatchback will surpass the Tesla sedan sometime during Q3, while the Geely EV will be looking to do the same in Q4.

As such, it seems likely that the Model 3 will fail to reach a podium position this year, something it has managed to achieve consistently since 2018….

Regarding position changes, it’s a BYD festival. There were four position changes, all benefitting the Shenzhen make:

  • The veteran Qin Plus managed to surpass the Xiaomi SU7(!), climbing to #7;
  • As for the Dolphin, it climbed one position, to #14;
  • The Yuan Up was … up to #17;
  • Finally, the Song L jumped three spots, to #16.

Top Selling Brands & OEMs

BYD remained at the helm, doubling the sales of runner-up Tesla, but sales seem to be plateauing (+6% YoY), so BYD export numbers will need to continue growing in significant volumes in order to continue the rapid growth of previous years.

Wuling was 4th, followed by #5 Volkswagen (the 54,000 units of June were its best score since December 2022) and #6 BMW.

Down below, the highlight is #7 Leapmotor continuing its record streak. Its sales jumped to some 46,000 units, thus making it the hottest selling Chinese startup at this point.

Still on the Chinese startup list, a mention goes out to AITO, which jumped to 8th thanks to 45,000 registrations, a new record for the Huawei-backed startup. That was much thanks to the successful launch of the M8 model, which somehow hasn’t eaten into the M9 flagship model’s sales — even though it is also a comfy, full size SUV.

Mercedes was 10th, thanks to some 35,000 registrations, its best score in 15 months, all while another premium German, Audi, also shined, thanks to 26,000 units, its best result in 18 months.

Outside the top 20, we should also highlight SAIC’s MG, with 20,897 units, BYD’s FanChengBao (18,903, a new record), and especially Czechia’s Skoda, which also once again hit a record score, 20,254 registrations. Will Skoda become a familiar face on the table?

In the YTD table, there wasn’t much to report at the top. BYD is well ahead of everyone else, while #2 Tesla has an advantage of more than 150,000 units over #3 Geely — so, it has its silver medal safe.

So, despite falling sales (-13% YoY), Tesla is still capable of keeping Geely at bay.

Below the podium, the main changes were #10 Mercedes and #11 Toyota surpassing #12 Volvo.

In the second half of the table, AITO profited from the success of its recent M8 and jumped three positions, finishing June in #15.

Looking at registrations by OEM, #1 BYD is still quite comfortable in the lead. It has an advantage of 12% market share over #2 Geely, which has seen its share drop from 11.3% in May to its current 11.1%.

In Tesla-land, the US make benefitted from its expected peak performance in June, going from 7.4% to its current 8%.

Still, 8% is a significant 3.6% share drop, continuing Tesla downwards spiral compared to June 2024 (11.6%), which itself was already down compared to two years ago (12.8% in June ’23), three years ago (13.6%), and four years ago (15.2%).

Looking just at BEVs …

While BYD (17.3% in June, up from 17.2% in May) continues to consolidate its leadership position, Tesla (12.2%, up 1% compared to May) profited from its peak in June to surpass Geely (11.5%, down 0.2%).

In 4th, SAIC narrowly surpassed Volkswagen Group thanks to a strong performance in June. It will be interesting to see how the race between these two will develop in the second half of the year.

Looking at the best selling pickup trucks, the #1 seller is the Ford F-150…. Nope, it is the BYD Shark. With 15,829 units, the Shark has beaten Ford’s electric pickup by some 700 units (15,829 vs. 15,161).

Still, Ford might have a card up its sleeve for the second half of the year — the Ford Ranger PHEV.

June was the Ranger’s second month on the market, and it registered some 500 units. How high will the midsize Ford model go? Tough question. I guess it depends on how seriously the Dearborn make is developing it. The potential is huge, as is the threat that the BYD Shark might pose to it. It will be an interesting story to watch unfold during the next few months.

Interestingly, if we look at GM’s pickup program as a whole, bundling the Silverado, Sierra, and Hummer volumes together, we get some 14,000 units, which might not be enough to remove the Ford F-150 and BYD Shark from the top positions, but would be enough to outsell the Tesla Cybertruck (12,300 units). Not bad, GM, not bad….
