 Galicia’s Pedralonga Estudios to Launch Coruña Immersive Studio 


In a bid to continue attracting international shoots as in-camera VFX takes Spain by storm, Spain is bulking up on its studio infrastructure, with some of the latest cutting edge advances looking set to take place in A Coruña, the biggest port city of Galicia, in northwest Spain.

In one move, Pedralonga Studios, a joint venture of the Galician Audiovisual Cluster (CLAG) and A Coruña U is bow Coruña Immersive Studio (CEI), a virtual studio which presented billed as the largest in Spain and one of the most advanced of integrated virtual facilities in Europe at a presentation Thursday during Madrid trade fair Iberseries & Platino Industria.    

Located at A Coruña’s Cidade das TIC, the CEI boasts a 750 sq. meter (8,100 sq. ft.) virtual soundstage equipped with a semi-circular LED screen measuring 28 meters (92 feet) wide by 6 meters (18 feet) high and offering 4K resolution with a 1.9 pixel pitch definition. 

CEI’s technology is advanced in that it’s totally integrated, uses Pixotope 1.9 definition software. It’s tried and tested,” José Manuel Deus, managing director of Pedralonga Estudio, told Variety at Iberseries & Platino Industria, noting the CEI will officially open its doors on Oct. 8. It has clients confirmed for commercials, features and TV series, he added. VFX supervisor is Diego Fernández Avendaño. 

Occupying a total space of 2,000 sq. meters (21,500 sq. ft.), CEI, which cost just under €9 million ($10.5 million) is promoted by A Coruña county council  and CLAG, and supported by the Spanish Government through Next Generation European Union Funds.

CEI is run by Pedralonga Estudios, an over 5,500 sq. meter (59,000 sq. ft.) studio complex scheduled to open in 2026 and backed by 10 top Galician production companies, the Galician Audiovisual Cluster and the A Coruña U., with the support of the Regional Government of Galicia through IGAPE. 

The new Pedralonga Studios facility will includes two conventional soundstages, at 2,500 sq. meters (26,900 sq. ft.) and 2,000 sq. meters (21,500 sq. ft.), which makes them among the biggest in Spain. An extra 1,500 sq. meters (16,150 sq. ft) will be taken up by offices, dressing and changing rooms, what are described as “technical areas.”
