Overall, BYD’s vehicle sales growth calmed down in July. After who knows how many months of strong vehicle sales growth, BYD’s passenger vehicle sales increased only 0.1% in July 2025 compared to July 2024. However, that hides a trend many EV enthusiasts will be very happy to hear about — BYD’s fully electric passenger car sales were up 37% in July year over year.
Of course, once you see both of those numbers, you know what else happened — sales of BYD plugin hybrids (PHEVs) must have dropped a lot. And they did. They were down 22.7% in July.
Looking at the figures for January–July, fully electric vehicle (BEV) sales were up 40.3%, while PHEV sales were also still up, by 14.8%. Overall, sales of BYD’s passenger vehicles were up an even 26%.
Overall, you can see a bit of a slide in PHEV sales numbers over the past several months. Is that a trend we can expect will continue until BYD phases out PHEVs? I think that’s unlikely, as PHEVs are still very popular, but it’s good to see that trend for now at least.
