If you’ve been growing out your hair, the climbing spring and summer temps might be tempting you to go to your salon for a fresh chop. But an effortless French bob actually requires knowing what to ask for and what products to use to keep it looking chic all summer long.
E! spoke with Sally Hershberger, the celebrity hair stylist behind iconic hair looks for Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, and Miley Cyrus.
Sally gave us the best tips on what to ask your stylist for when you want a cool-girl summer chop (instead of leaving the salon looking like a little kid), plus how to style your bob and keep it looking amazing between cuts.
“The most important thing you can do is bring visual references,” she said. “Photos are the best way to communicate what you want – whether that’s from Instagram, Vogue, or anywhere you’re seeing cuts you love.”
“You’ll also want to be specific about where you want the length to hit – whether that’s at the chin, just below, or grazing the shoulders – because even small differences can completely change the overall look,” she advised.
The longtime celeb stylist explained that a good stylist will tailor the cut to your face shape and your natural texture. “A ‘cool-girl’ bob isn’t one-size-fits-all – it’s about customizing the shape so it enhances your features and works with how your hair naturally falls,” she said.
