Darren Aronofsky is looking to reteam with his The Whale studio A24, and is talks to direct Dwayne Johnson in the feature Breakthrough, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The logline for the film reads: “In turn-of-the-millennium Southern California, an alienated young man comes under the influence of a motivational guru, whose intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness.” Johnson will be playing a supporting role in the film.
A24 will produce and finance actor-writer Zeke Goodman.
Stacey Sher’s Shiny Penny Productions will produce with Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions. Jacob Epstein and Justin Wolf will executive produce via Lighthouse Management and Media.
This will be the second A24 project for Johnson, who stars in Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, which is due out this October. Johnson, who is known for family-friendly fare like Jungle Cruise and Red One, has been setting up projects with auteur directors as of late. He is set to star in a Hawaii-set mob epic with Emily Blunt and Leonardo DiCaprio from director Martin Scorsese.
Aronofsky will soon release crime thriller Caught Stealing.
