Congress Faces Tight Calendar to Avert Shutdown Amid Tensions
A government funding fight — and potential shutdown — shapes up as the dominant issue hanging over Congress this fall.
But also looming are brawls over the Federal Reserve, President Donald Trump’s power play in Washington DC, the annual defense bill, and long-running disputes over White House nominations in the Senate. They’ll all unfold against a backdrop of jockeying for power and leverage in next year’s primaries and midterm elections, and congressional unrest over records tied to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Lawmakers return to Washington today with 16 scheduled working days before the funding deadline on the night of Sept. 30.
