CJ ENM’s ‘Law and the City’ Scores Strong Global Streaming Performance

LEGAL LEAP

CJ ENM‘s “Law and the City” has performed strongly across international streaming platforms in its debut week, with the legal drama starring Lee Jong-suk, Mun Ka-young, Kang You-seok, Ryu Hye-young, and Im Sung-jae achieving notable rankings worldwide.

The series, following five associate lawyers in Seoul’s Seocho-dong legal district, cracked the top 5 on Rakuten Viki across 144 regions including the U.S., Brazil, France, U.A.E., and India. It topped weekly charts in MENA and India while placing second in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania.

In Japan, the show ranked second on U-Next’s drama charts and sixth overall, achieving the platform’s “best first-week result in 2025.” The series also claimed first place in iQIYI’s K-drama category in Taiwan and topped tvN Asia viewership across Southeast Asia.

Locally, “Law and the City” has led Korea’s prime-time slot with 5.1% average household viewership since its July 5 premiere.

“We are glad to see all the records that ‘Law and The City’ has set,” said Sebastian Kim, VP of international content business at CJ ENM.

MUMBAI MARVEL

India’s Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw and Maharashtra state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis jointly inaugurated the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) campus at Mumbai’s NFDC Films Division Complex, Pedder Road, on Friday.

The facility features advanced media labs, post-production suites, and dedicated spaces for animation, VFX, and XR training. Academic programs commence in September, with 300 students expected in the inaugural year. A second campus is planned for Filmcity Goregaon within two years.

“In this creative world, technology has become an integral part and it is important that we empower people who want to be part of the creator economy,” said Vaishnaw. Fadnavis added, “This is not just an event; it is a moment — a moment that is now transforming into a movement.”

IICT will offer programs in integrated media post-production, animation, VFX, XR, and emerging technologies, targeting India’s growing AVGC-XR sector (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality).

PROGRAMMING POWER

The Berlin International Film Festival has expanded its programming reach with the appointment of Anu Rangachar as delegate for South Asia. The Indian producer-curator will scout regional titles for director Tricia Tuttle‘s team, reporting to co-programming chiefs Jacqueline Lyanga and Michael Stütz.

Rangachar brings festival cred from her role heading MAMI Mumbai’s international program, plus distribution experience championing South Asian arthouse pics with U.S. buyers. Her producing resume includes multiple Indian indie features, including 2025 Berlinale title “Shadowbox,” 2023 Locarno film “Rapture” and 2020 Rotterdam selection “Nasir.”

“Anu beautifully rounds out our diverse team of curators, advisors and delegates who together bring many years of expertise and deep networks across the world’s film industries,” Tuttle said.

The hire strengthens Berlinale’s global programming network as festivals compete for emerging international content.
