Charged EVs | Komatsu and Dimaag unveil mobile MCS charger for remote construction and mining operations

Komatsu, a century-old global manufacturer of heavy equipment, has unveiled its partner Dimaag’s Mobile Megawatt Charging System, a mobile power supply designed to be deployed at a point of use and scalable up to 6 MW.

Dimaag is a relatively new design and technology company. The Mobile Megawatt Charging System—developed by Tesla co-founder Ian Wright, who is now VP of Engineering at Dimaag and Komatsu—offers a compact, high-efficiency DC-DC converter combined with a long-life, high-discharge-rate 295 kWh energy storage system. Both components use an advanced thermal management system to optimize lifecycle and safety during times of high power delivery. The modular DC-DC converter provides charging capacities ranging from 1 MW to 6 MW and is also equipped with an MCS connector.

The designers at Dimaag intend for the system to be deployed at construction sites and in other off-road applications, where it can be stationed at a point of use, thereby helping to reduce downtime associated with trips to distant charging stations.

The monster system—which comes with four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering to navigate tight surroundings as well as rough terrain—is 67” (1,700 mm) in length by 59” (1,500 mm) in width and 55” (1,400 mm) in height. It can weigh as much as 6.6 tons (6 tonnes), depending on configuration. The system’s 208 kW motor delivers 1,608 lb-ft (2,180 Nm) of continuous torque at each wheel and the power supply is capable of a top speed of 22 mph (35 km/h) in addition to handling a maximum grade of 40% with its spring-applied parking brakes.

There is no driver’s seat. Operation is either fully autonomous or via a joystick remote.

“Off-road vehicle electrification demands practical solutions that not only meet but exceed the performance of equivalent large diesel engine vehicles, while also providing substantial total cost of ownership savings. Dimaag’s electrification and high-power megawatt charging systems are designed to achieve this,” said Taisuke Kusaba, Komatsu’s CTO.

The Dimaag Mobile Megawatt Charging System is not the only somewhat unusual off-highway electric vehicle that Komatsu has featured in 2025. The company introduced an autonomous electric underwater bulldozer at the CES show. The new bulldozer featured a battery capacity of 450 kWh and a four-hour charging time.  It was far from being Komatsu’s first underwater bulldozer, however; the company had previously debuted a conventionally-powered model over 50 years ago, back in 1970.
