Continuing its 2026 trend, BYD had another down month in terms of year-over-year vehicle sales. Only one segment of its vehicle sales saw growth (and it was significant growth). To start with, let’s jump into the passenger vehicle sales.

Note that for each chart or graph, I’m including a static image and an embedded graph — the former show better on some devices and the latter show better on others.

BYD Sales Down 20.4% in March

BYD had a 20.4% drop in passenger vehicle sales in March compared to March 2025. Those are all “new energy vehicles,” of course — full electrics (BEVs) and plugin hybrids (PHEVs).

March numbers were still a nice bump over January and February, as expected, but what the company really needs is a big burst in sales to catch up to 2025. Larry Evans has explained well what might have been holding sales back, and how that can happen. If you missed his writing on the matter, see:

We’ll see what happens.

BEV sales were down 11.1% year over year in March, but were up 85.6% month over month. They totaled 147,601 last month. Again, that looks good compared to the first two months of the year, but if you use the interactive chart and go back and hover over March 2025, you can get a visualization of how much BYD needs to improve to catch back up to 2025.

The story was not much different for plugin hybrids. Sales were up 36.8% month over month, but down 27.9% year over year, totaling 148,092 in March 2026.

To wrap up, here’s a look at sales of all of these in one chart — BEVs, PHEVs, and the two combined.
